NE Voices 2021 Workshops
...with more on the way!

Cyberbrand
Zein Karam
How do we create engaging, cohesive, and exciting content that enriches the lives of our audience when content is limited to remote creation.
Brand-Aid: Identity and Brand in A Cappella
Adam Levine, Jon Levalley, and Anthony Pulido
Starting a new group? Redefining an existing one? Join us in uncovering how to build an iconic brand. We'll give you the tools to establish and express your group's identity, visually and musically.
Remote Recording and You
Tim Bongiovanni
An outline of techniques to get the best results possible from home recording. Whether using a smart phone or professional mic and interface, these best practices will get your voices to sound as good as they can.
The Dos and Don'ts of DIY A Cappella
Graham Allen
The pandemic has left us all feeling isolated, physically and mentally. Some of us don't have the opportunity to make music with others in person at all, but that shouldn't stop you from being able to make music. In this workshop, we will talk extremely realistically about what it takes to learn how do each step of the a cappella process yourself. By looking at the experience of self-starters in the field and examining available resources at every budget line, we will figure out what you need to learn to make a cappella music on your own and how you will self-curate your a cappella production education.
Vocal Percussion 101
Beejul Khatri
Everything you need to start beatboxing from scratch! You will learn essential practice habits that will help you improve beyond the basics in no time.
Introduction to Jazz Improvisation
Highline Vocal Jazz
In this workshop we'll take a look at how jazz musicians approach improvising from both an intuitive and a theoretical perspective.
Theoretically - what notes should I sing over each chord?
Intuitively - what makes a good solo, and how do I take risks, regardless of which notes I'm "supposed" to sing?

Jazz is fun because it's a combination of left and right brain activity. We'll demonstrate both individual approaches in contrast to a combined approach and students will be able to choose for themselves what kind of style they prefer/how both approaches work together.
Small Ensemble Rehearsal Techniques: How to Navigate a Group-Led Rehearsal
Highline Vocal Jazz
In the world of professional a cappella, many groups do not operate under the baton of a sole artistic director. Singers should prepare themselves to be communicative collaborators so they may feel emboldened by their skills and empowered to share musical ideas. Highline operates as a cohesive unit of five individuals with unique skills to bring to the table. In this workshop, we'll demonstrate how we rehearse together towards honing our craft and making the highest level music we can.
Fast, Fun, Low-Tech Virtual Project Techniques
Nina Pelligra
In the persistent age of the "virtual choir," I've developed a remote recording process that captures an in-person rehearsal experience. I can teach you how to get the best quality audio and performance, while keeping it easy, fun, and low-tech for you and your students. I’m a CARA-nominated a cappella producer, and I’ve found that you can get 90% of the way there using just your iPhone. It's possible to create an event that represents your hard work and commitment without adding any more hours to your day.
